Hills and Valleys

I just heard, for the first time the other day, a song by Tauren Wells called “Hills and Valleys.” It, of course, made me cry, but, more importantly, it spoke to me through my sadness.

We’ve all experienced pain and joy and heartbreak and abundant blessings at some point in our lives. This chapter of my life takes place in the shadows – the lowest valley of them all. A place where dreams were broken, the most precious gift was taken away, and tears flow freely without end.

However, I’m standing on the promise that I am not alone. God wipes away our tears in the midst of our heartache – he doesn’t expect us to not be sad. He hears our prayers from our lowest places. Psalm 56:8 says that he keeps track of all my sorrows and has collected all of my tears in his bottle. How amazing… God loves us enough to collect and record every tear that streams down our faces. Psalm 34:18 says that the LORD is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those whose spirits are crushed. God holds us in his Almighty hands and will not leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).

God’s Grace is Enough, from the lows to the highs of our lives. The God that gives us success on the mountaintop is the same God that walks with us through the darkness of the valley. In our lowest places we lift our eyes to a God who sees us, and in our highest places we bow low to the God who set us there. I’m so thankful that our God is the “God of the Hills and Valleys”. I can’t imagine this experience without that truth!

Lyrics:
I’ve walked among the shadows
You wiped my tears away
And I’ve felt the pain of heartbreak
And I’ve seen the brighter days
And I’ve prayed prayers to heaven from my lowest place
And I have held the blessings
God, you give and take away

No matter what I have, Your grace is enough
No matter where I am, I’m standing in Your love

On the mountains, I will bow my life
To the one who set me there
In the valley, I will lift my eyes to the one who sees me there
When I’m standing on the mountain aft, didn’t get there on my own
When I’m walking through the valley end, no I am not alone!
You’re God of the hills and valleys!
Hills and Valleys!
God of the hills and valleys
And I am not alone!

I’ve watched my dreams get broken
In you I hope again!
No matter what I know
Know I’m safe inside Your hand

On the mountains, I will bow my life
To the one who set me there
In the valley, I will lift my eyes to the one who sees me there
When I’m standing on the mountain aft, didn’t get there on my own
When I’m walking through the valley end, no I am not alone!
You’re God of the hills and valleys!
Hills and Valleys!
God of the hills and valleys
And I am not alone!

Father, you give and take away
Every joy and every pain
Through it all you will remain
Over it all!
